I can’t believe he said that to me!

I remember it as clearly as if it happened yesterday. I was a summer camp counselor, entrusted with the care of up to ten, 10-year-old boys. It was the eighth and final week of camp. I was sitting in the dining hall waiting for the campers to come in for lunch, exhausted from investing into so many energetic young boys. I'll never forget this: the camp director came up to my table, leaned over and said, "John, at the beginning of summer, I had my concerns about you as a counselor. But I can honestly say, that you’re one of the best counselors we’ve got." All of a sudden, I didn’t feel so tired. I have remembered his words and still take comfort from them over a quarter of a century later.

The specific, encouraging words that we share with our loved ones, life partners, children, team members, neighbors and even total strangers can last for a lifetime. Take time out of your day to give specific, uplifting encouragement to the people around you. It will bless them more than you may ever know. A word timely spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. Be an encourager!
